The Wentworth Group
WWF-Australia provides science-based solutions to Australia's greatest environmental problems by working with Australia's leading scientists, economists, policy specialists and industry leaders.
In 2003, WWF convened the Wentworth Group of Concerned Scientists to develop practical scientific and economic solutions for the better management of Australia's precious landscapes and fresh water resources.
The Wentworth Group's Blueprint for a Living Continent and A New Model for Landscape Conservation provided a management model for native vegetation in NSW, which was adopted by the Carr Government as policy in 2003 as part of their $400 million commitment to ending broadscale land clearing in NSW.
In 2004, the Wentworth Group released its Blueprint for a National Water Plan, outlining solutions for the protection and restoration of fresh water ecosystems, effective water conservation and the restoration of sustainable water flows to catchments such as the Murray Darling Basin. This resulted in an historic agreement by the Australian Government and most Australian states to a National Water Initiative (NWI), which provides a $500 million commitment to improved fresh water management throughout Australia.
