Standing up for Queensland's Environment

Queensland has spectacular reefs, pristine beaches, ancient rainforests and charismatic wildlife. Unfortunately we also have some of the world's worst rates of climate pollution, land clearing and wildlife extinction. WWF and its allies have identified powerful solutions. But we need your help to make them happen.

I am a constituent and I am writing to enlist your support for WWF's plan for ensuring that our wildlife and our unique Queensland way of life can survive climate change. Specifically, I would like the next State government to adopt the following four solutions:

Solutions for Our State

1) End land clearing, cut climate pollution and save wildlife
Clearing kills 70 million animals a year, destroys the equivalent of 5 million suburban blocks of habitat and emits 24% of our climate pollution. The State must:
- Enhance and enforce laws to protect all recoverable endangered habitats
- Pay farmers for retaining trees to capture carbon dioxide

2) New national parks to save threatened wildlife
The State has promised to double protected areas, but hasn't yet invested the $10m needed each year to buy land and the extra 10% needed each year to run the expanded estate.

3) Cut pollution to the Great Barrier Reef
Up to 700 reefs are slowly dying from toxic farm run-off. Yet the solutions are well known - reward good farm practice and ban high risk pesticide, fertiliser and cattle stocking practices.

4) Ban shark fishing and the shark fin industry
Fishing kills 70,000 sharks a year, many inside the Great Barrier Reef. They are vulnerable to over-fishing and are disappearing from our oceans. We must stop slaughtering sharks for their fins.
