Speaking Points
When you talk to your Senator this week:
- Let them know who you are and where you are from:
- Tell them you are calling because you're concerned about climate change:
- Tell them what you want:
- Be polite.
There are four key messages to get across:
- Australia should be a leader, not a laggard, in a strong global climate agreement at Copenhagen and passing the emissions trading scheme now will help:
- Climate action will create the clean energy jobs Australia needs to prosper this century, but more investment is needed:
- Don't cave in to the big polluter lobby. Listen to the community:
- Extra action by individuals to reduce emissions should count towards the national target.
Here is a suggestion of what you can say
Hi my name is [insert name], I am calling from [state]. I would like to speak to Senator [insert name]
[the person on the phone will either ask you what you are calling about or will say the senator is not available can I take a message]
I am calling because I am concerned about climate change [if you want say why you are concerned about climate change please do here]
As my representative in the Federal Senate I would like the Senator to vote for the emissions trading scheme this sitting period and before the United Nations global climate talks in Copenhagen.
I also would like the Senator to ignore lobbyist from profitable polluting industries and instead stand up for an environmentally effective emissions trading scheme that invests more money in clean industries, provides flexibility on emission reduction targets and counts my additional individual action.
Please pass this message on to the Senator.
