Climate Change Action

The Australian Government will soon announce its greenhouse gas pollution reduction target for 2020. This critical decision will affect us all and your voice needs to be heard!

A two degree rise in average global surface temperature will have severe social, economic and environmental impacts: 3.1 billion people will suffer serious water shortages; 180 million people will be affected by sea level rise; and up to 35% of the world's animal and plants will face extinction. The world's leading climate scientists believe that we must reduce greenhouse gas pollution by 25%-40% below 1990 levels if we are to avoid the worst impacts of climate change. The Australian Government agreed that this was so at the United Nations climate change conference in Bali in 2007.

As a wealthy developed country, with ample low emission sources of energy, Australia should agree to reduce its greenhouse pollution by at least 25% below 1990 levels by 2020.

Take Action - Australian political leaders need to hear from you.

The Australian Government is under pressure from big polluting businesses to go slow on climate action. Australian political leaders need to hear other voices. They must know the Australian public support decisive action to protect our future.

Dear Prime Minister

Climate change affects us all, and in many cases its impact is already being felt.

I am concerned that if Australia does not take decisive action to greatly reduce its emissions of greenhouse gases, the consequences for the planet - including the humans, animals and plants which depend on it - could be disastrous.

A two degree rise in average global surface temperature will have severe social, economic and environmental impacts: 3.1 billion people will suffer serious water shortages; 180 million people will be affected by sea level rise; and up to 35% of the world's animal and plants will face extinction.

Australia has the skills, resources and technology to reduce pollution very significantly over the next ten years and as a wealthy developed country Australia should help facilitate an international agreement by setting a target to reduce greenhouse pollution at least 25% below 1990 levels by 2020.

Yours sincerely
