Letter to the minister: Barrow Island

In our January Futuremakers email bulletin, we asked people to support our campaign to halt plans by oil and gas giants, Chevron, Shell and ExxonMobil, to build a massive liquid natural gas plant on Barrow Island, WA.

Nearly 14,000 people from around the world joined the petition - a fantastic response - but we still need your help. Approval for the project now rests with the Federal Government and a decision is likely to be made soon by the Federal Minister for the Environment, Malcolm Turnbull.

Please send a letter to the Minister, and Peter Garrett, Shadow Minister for the Environment, expressing your concern about the Gorgon plan and asking that the plant be located on the mainland.

Dear Minister Turnbull/Shadow Minister Garrett,

I am writing to you to express my concern about the proposed Gorgon liquid natural gas (LNG) project, in particular, plans to locate the LNG plant on the sensitive Barrow Island off Western Australia. I would ask that you heed scientific advice and save this remarkable island which is home to many rare and endangered species.

I urge you to take firm, sensible action now to avoid the risk of eroding the Island's extraordinary biodiversity over coming years.

As you are probably aware, Barrow Island is the second largest island in Western Australia, and is one of Australia's oldest and most important nature reserves, being designated as a class A nature reserve in 1910, and is recognized internationally as being of the highest order for its natural values. It is a sanctuary for marsupials like the burrowing bettong, the golden bandicoot and many endemic species.

The gas project could also threaten a regional population of marine turtles that is already listed as vulnerable to extinction. A channel would be dredged through coral reef habitat and a port with a jetty, kilometres long, would be constructed in an area proposed for a marine protected area.

I would urge you carefully consider the scientific advice that warns against approving the Gorgon gas plant on Barrow Island. Alternatives exist on the mainland and we implore you to ensure that this path is taken.
