Stop Northern Territory Land Clearing

What must the Territory Government do?

  1. End major land clearing across the Territory to help significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and protect our unique wildlife and rivers. Preventing major land clearing is the quickest, cheapest and least disruptive way to reduce the Territory's emissions by over one million tonnes each year.
  2. Pass a strong law - such as a Native Vegetation Act - that ensures firm regulation of small-scale land clearing. Other states have already done this because they recognised the major environmental threat posed by land clearing.
  3. Provide structural adjustment and incentive funds for landholders affected by the end of major clearing to help them develop new business opportunities that don't require major clearing. For example, landholders and Indigenous communities should be reward financially for conserving wildlife and storing carbon in native vegetation.
