Tasman Peninsula Seabird Studies

Volunteers are being sought to assist with a project run by the Institute of Marine and Antarctic Studies at the University of Tasmania.

The major focus of this project is on the breeding success, feeding ecology and population trends of short-tailed shearwaters and little penguins.

Field work involved:

  • Whole island population survey
  • Identification banding
  • Weighing adult birds
  • Weighing and measuring chicks
  • Data logger deployment
  • Blood sampling

The field site is one of Tasmania's offshore islands. Field trips are between 6 and 12 days long. Surveys can often involve crawling through thick undergrowth with backpacks and survey equipment for many hours a day. The project also includes some night work involving attaching and removing loggers. The only infrastructure on the island is a small shed, so all equipment must be shipped on and off with each trip. Transport to the island is by boat leaving from Hobart and is heavily dependent on the weather.

Proposed trip dates are as follows:-

  • September 27th to October 4th, 2010
  • December 14th to 20th, 2010
  • January 18th to 28th, 2011
  • January 28th to February 7th, 2011
  • February 17th to 28th, 2011
  • February 28th to March 9th, 2011
  • March 17th to 28th, 2011
  • March 28th to April 6th, 2011

Volunteers interested in assisting with this project are asked to email a brief letter of introduction, outlining previous experience to the project leader.

Project leader: Jaimie Cleeland- jaimiec@utas.edu.au

When: 27-Sep-2010 to 06-Apr-2011

Where: Tasman Peninsula, TAS
