Getting around
Transport was responsible for around a third of Australia's household greenhouse gas emissions in 2004. In Sydney, for example, 70% of transport was in private vehicles. In addition to increasing greenhouse gas levels, it is estimated that air pollution is responsible for 2400 deaths a year in Australia.
First Steps
- Take public transport to work. Not very difficult for most of us.
- Walk or cycle rather than driving. It's healthy too! (There are bicycle user groups in major cities that provide useful information on cycling.)
Big impact
- Drive efficiently. Even just correct tyre pressure can save 10% on your fuel consumption! A well-serviced car can save you – and the environment - heaps!
- Carpooling. Company on the way to the company can knock your travel impact and costs down by 75%. And your car stays a whole lot younger.
- Reduce Air travel. For business - video conferences instead of air travel; for holidays - discover some of the fabulous destinations closer to home.
