Millennium report shows environment is the issue of the future

A new study reveals approximately 60 per cent of the ecosystem services that support life on Earth are being degraded or used unsustainably. Scientists warn the harmful consequences of this degradation could grow significantly worse in the next 50 years.

The Millennium Ecosystem Assessment Synthesis Report was conducted by 1,300 experts from 95 countries.

Speaking on ABC TV News WWF-Australia's Director of Conservation Dr Ray Nias said, "This report links environment and humans in a way that has not been done before. It shows clearly that environmental degradation is no longer just an issue, it is the issue for the future.

"The natural processes that sustain and support life on earth are declining rapidly. Human survival and progress can no longer be considered as separate to protecting the environment. They are the same thing. By 2050 the quality of life for most people in the world will depend on how well we deal with the environment now."
