Frogs! in Tasmania 'Summer Lovin' Survey'
01 Dec 2003
Have you heard the distinctive growling call of the green and golden frog, a long growl, CRAW-AW-AW-AW-AWK alternating with short grunts, or the call of the striped marsh frog, a single explosive WHUCK in your backyard?
If so, we want to hear from you!
The WWF-Australia Frogs! Program in Tasmania is about to embark on a state-wide survey for two summer breeding frogs: the green and golden frog (Litoria raniformis), listed as nationally vulnerable and the striped marsh frog (Limnodynastes peronii), listed as rare in Tasmania.
The first stage of the survey will hop from King Island to Flinders Island from Sunday 30 November till Sunday 7 December, before the second stage of the survey leaps into action covering the east, north and north west of Tasmania from 9-18 December.
During our Frogs! Summer Lovin' Survey, we will be holding a series of training workshops in a number of locations: King and Flinders Islands, Bicheno, Winnaleah, Bridport, George Town, Port Sorell, Launceston, Stanley, Roseberry, Hamilton.
'The Summer Lovin' Survey means Frogseekers can learn more about Tasmania's frog species and get involved in frog conservation in their local area," says Dr Karyl Michaels, coordinator of the WWF-Australia Frogs! Conservation program in Tasmania.
'The efforts of these volunteer Frogseekers is vital, as they provide data from their local area which we can then use to assess the distribution and health of Tasmania's frog species.'
Frogseekers is a voluntary, community-based frog monitoring program and the foundation of WWF-Australia Frogs! Conservation program in Tasmania.
All Frogseekers receive a free Frogseekers Kit which contains a full colour guide to all of Tasmania's frogs, fact sheets, frog call recordings (on tape or CD) and survey forms, and a regular newsletter.
