Wetland Watch
Wetland Watch is a wetland conservation project of WWF-Australia. The project is aimed at enhancing the sustainable management and conservation of wetlands on the Swan Coastal Plain, focusing on high value wetlands on private land.
In order to improve the management and secure the conservation of high value wetlands, Wetland Watch has three main objectives:
- Increase community and landowner's appreciation of the value of wetlands and other natural areas.
- Increase community capacity for the management and conservation of wetlands both on private and publicly owned lands.
- Secure the long-term conservation of wetlands on private property through the adoption of voluntary management agreements and conservation covenants by landowners.
The project was initiated in April 2004, and in its pilot year has focused on the southern Swan Coastal Plain, specifically the City of Armadale, City of Cockburn and Town of Kwinana.
Project partners include:
- local governments (City of Armadale, City of Cockburn, City of Rockingham, Town of Kwinana)
- state government agencies (Department of Environment)
- Government of Western Australia through the Minister for the Environment
- WA Museum
- Water Corporation
Wetland Watch is funded by the Australian Government's Natural Heritage Trust program delivered through the Swan Catchment Council. The Swan Catchment Council is a community-led regional group with responsibility for coordinating and delivering natural resource management in the Swan region.
