Conserving Australia's Unique Coastal Dolphins

Australian waters are home to at least one, perhaps two, unique dolphins. The Australian snubfin dolphin (Orcaella heinsohni) was only recently described as a new species1 and recent genetic studies also suggest that Australian populations of Indo-Pacific humpback dolphin (Sousa chinensis) may also be a new species found only in Australia2. Both dolphin species are found in the coastal tropical waters of northern Australia.
