WWF STANDS READY TO WORK WITH THE NEW LNP GOVERNMENT ON CRUCIAL ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES
The World Wide Fund for Nature-Australia today said it is looking forward to working with the new LNP government on the crucial environmental issues that threaten Queensland’s wildlife and way of life.
“WWF has had positive engagement with David Crisafulli and his team in opposition and we now congratulate them on their election victory,” said WWF-Australia CEO Dermot O’Gorman.
“WWF stands ready, backed by our 2.4 million supporters, to work with the government to regenerate nature by 2030.
“We praised Mr Crisafulli when the LNP voted for an emissions reduction target of 75% by 2035. WWF is calling for the LNP to stay the course and honour that commitment.
“That should be backed up by a clear and credible plan, released in the first 100 days, to achieve Queensland’s strong renewable energy targets.
“Legislated renewable targets should be retained as a signal to investors that the new government is serious about unlocking clean economy opportunities.
“With eastern Australia a global deforestation hotspot, we urge the LNP not to weaken tree clearing laws and to keep koala habitat protection.
“Responsible emissions and renewable energy targets and tree protection will help give the Reef a fighting chance.
“It’s also crucial the LNP completes, by June 2027, the phase out of commercial gill net fishing in Reef waters.
“WWF commends the LNP for announcing 150 extra rangers and urges that Indigenous Land and Sea Rangers make up a high proportion of the new positions,” Mr O’Gorman said.
