A COP31 DEAL MUST DELIVER JUSTICE FOR COMMUNITIES ON THE FRONT LINE OF CLIMATE CHANGE

WWF-Australia has urged leaders to work together to deliver a COP31 climate summit rooted in justice for those most affected by climate change.

Minister for Climate Change and Energy, Chris Bowen today announced a proposed agreement that will see Türkiye host the COP31 meeting in Antalya in 2026 with Australia as President of the COP negotiations. A pre-COP world leaders’ meeting is likely to be held in the Pacific.

“This proposed agreement is not a perfect scenario, but it still provides an opportunity for Türkiye, Australia and the Pacific to put First Nations leadership at the heart of global climate action,” said Nicole Forrester, Chief Regenerative Officer, WWF-Australia.

“Whilst hosting matters, the COP agenda for climate ambition is the same wherever the summit is held.

“Building on progress at COP30, WWF will work with partners to ensure the decisions made at COP31 are rooted in justice for those most affected by climate change.

“Australia still has a crucial role to play in leading these climate negotiations.

“At a time of increasing climate disasters and shifting geopolitics, the world needs to come together to drive the biggest energy transition in a century while building people and nature’s resilience to climate impacts.

“We’re pleased to see the proposal for a separate leaders’ meeting to be held in the Pacific.

“Pacific Island countries are on the frontline of the climate crisis and Pacific leaders are global champions for fair and equitable climate financing. This meeting will be a chance for the world to learn from Pacific leaders and make sure we deliver the transformative change that’s urgently needed.

“In Australia, we must remain focused on securing strong emissions cuts, replacing fossil fuels with abundant, affordable renewable energy, and elevating the voices of First Nations leaders and communities on the frontlines.”
