LABOR'S MARINE PARKS POLICY A WELCOME STEP FORWARD

WWF-Australia today welcomed the marine parks policy announced by the Australian Labor Party.

“A well-funded, comprehensive network of marine parks implemented throughout Australian waters is well overdue,” said Richard Leck, WWF-Australia’s Head of Oceans.

“This year, Australians have been shocked as coral bleaching, caused by global warming, has destroyed coral in some of our most iconic marine areas – the Great Barrier Reef, Coral Sea and the Kimberley."

“Scientific evidence demonstrates that marine sanctuaries help reefs recover from coral bleaching, and provide resilience to all ocean ecosystems. They are also vital for ensuring we have fish for the future, and help safeguard threatened species."

“WWF-Australia calls on the Turnbull Government to match this commitment and provide certainty for industries like tourism and fishing, whose businesses depend on healthy oceans,” he said.
