WWF WELCOMES BAN ON COAL AND GAS USING KOALA PARK CARBON CREDITS

WWF-Australia has welcomed the NSW Government's commitment to prevent carbon credits generated through the Great Koala National Park from being sold to coal and gas companies.

The NSW Government today announced it has submitted the Great Koala National Park project to the Clean Energy Regulator for approval.

In a statement, the government said carbon credits from the new national park will not be able to be sold to coal and gas projects.

“This is a step in the right direction. WWF’s position is that carbon credits must not prop up polluting industries like coal and gas,” said Dermot O’Gorman, WWF-Australia’s CEO.

“We look forward to hearing more from the NSW Government about its buyer eligibility criteria and how it will ensure these carbon credits are used as intended.

“Credible carbon credits must not only be generated with integrity but also sold with integrity.

“They should only be sold to companies with credible transition plans that are already doing everything they can to reduce their emissions.”

WWF-Australia has been advocating for the Great Koala National Park as part of its work to end native forest logging and protect and restore the forests of eastern Australia.
