In an Australian-first, WWF-Australia and Phillip Island Nature Parks launched a spectacular and fully-immersive ‘Antarctic Journey’ attraction at Phillip Island today.

The new visitor experience is located at the Nobbies Centre and complements the range of visitor experiences at Phillip Island Nature Parks, especially the nearby world-famous Penguin Parade.

The exhibition tells a powerful story of the magnificent landscapes and wildlife along the journey from Phillip Island via the Southern Ocean to Antarctica, providing guests with a rare opportunity to experience up close one of the world’s last untouched wildernesses.

Large, breathtaking images and video footage of key iconic wildlife including whales, penguins, albatross and seals guide visitors through the attraction that also includes exciting interactive exhibits.

The impressive main gallery transports visitors to sub-Antarctic and Antarctic landscapes via over 159 square metres of digital high definition screens showing stunning footage.

A highlight of the experience is the world-class ‘Augmented Reality’ area. The incredible technology allows visitors to stand on the ice in a virtual reality Antarctic environment. They can then ‘interact’ with key wildlife species and be amazed by their size and beauty. They may find themselves with penguins waddling at their feet and whales swimming by.

WWF-Australia CEO Dermot O’Gorman said he hoped the exhibit would inspire guests to learn more about the awe-inspiring wilderness of the Southern Ocean and Antarctica, and what they can do to protect this important part of the planet.

“Antarctica is our last remaining mystical wilderness. Its infinite beauty reminds us of how nature nourishes the soul, and its vulnerability demands that we act powerfully to conserve it,” Mr O’Gorman said.

“With the launch of this exhibit, guests can now experience for themselves the majesty of this pristine natural world, as well as the need to protect Antarctic wildlife and habitats for future generations.”

The ‘Antarctic Journey’ is a permanent exhibition and open seven days a week.
